The Center for Applied Research on Supply Chain Services at Fraunhofer IIS has conducted a network design study for a leading company in the chemical industry. In this study, they identified optimal warehouse locations across Europe in different scenarios with the explicit goal of minimizing transportation costs. The locations were calculated using an adaptive optimization approach that considered multiple constraints, including specific areas approved for warehouse locations, mandatory delivery processes, minimum loading quantities for trucks, and varying storage costs for different products. By utilizing AI-based forecasts of customer demands, various future scenarios were calculated and directly incorporated and evaluated in the optimal location selection process.

Key achievements

Illustration: Mathematically optimized warehouse locations in the European customer network.
  • Optimized network design: Through a rigorous mathematical approach, Fraunhofer identifies potential warehouse locations strategically focused on minimizing transportation costs while considering operational constraints and geographical factors.
  • AI-based forecasting for strategic planning: The implemented forecasting model provides insights into future demand patterns, serving as a key input for the optimization process.
  • Strategic consulting for cost-efficient network design: Fraunhofer IIS offers solutions for cost-efficient network design, taking into account various logistical constraints and product-specific storage costs. The recommendations include a comprehensive plan for optimizing warehouse and transportation costs, based on data-driven and mathematical analysis. Fraunhofer supports the interpretation of the analyses and provides concrete recommendations for action.

Our team of experts conducted sophisticated data analysis and applied complex mathematical optimization models in this project to develop innovative demand forecasts based on mathematical methods. This enables the planning of a more efficient and cost-effective logistic network.
